What is a Swim Angel? Do you have Swim Angels for this race? If so, how do I become one or request one?
A swim angel is an in-water swimmer support swimmer. These are friends of NYOW who are strong swimmers with extensive open water experience.
Please correspond with the race director Rondi Davies at least 1 week before the event to offer your services as a Swim Angel.
For those of you requesting a Swim Angel, please let us know some background information on what type of support you are looking for.
I’ve heard that this is an easy 10K. Is that true?
Some years it is and some years it isn’t. Because of that, you should train and be prepared to swim a 10K in open water. This is a marathon swim in the Hudson River, so there can — and most likely will — be wind, chop, flotsam, and jetsam. Only you can decide if you are ready for this. However, there will be support in the river, kayakers to direct you, and we do plan around a favorable current (1 MPH) for swimmers as possible.
What is the average water temperature?
As always there are NO guarantees on water temperature but this swim has historically ranged from 70-78 F.
Is the water clean?
The health of the Hudson continues to improve and many of us enjoy swimming in her on a regular basis. Historical water quality reports can be found at riverkeeper.org.
Is there support in the water?
There will be a range of support including some or all of the following: boats, RHIBS, jet skis, kayaks, paddleboards, and swim angels.
Are wetsuits allowed for this swim?
Yes, but you will be placed in a different category for your record of completion and any awards.
I signed up for the swimsuit category but want to switch to wetsuit category at the last minute. Can I?
Yes, by informing NYOW through email or in person during swimmer check-in
I have had an injury and have been instructed to use supportive KT tape. Is it acceptable by your rules for me to wear it during the swim?
Yes, and we would appreciate knowing your situation.
